We understand that some clients are concerned that the request to now verify ID for Company Directors / PSC’s might be linked to the government’s broader “digital ID” plans — but we want to reassure what these updates mean;
What’s actually happening
The new ID verification process is part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, which aims to:
- Improve the accuracy of information held at Companies House
- Help prevent fraud and misuse of company structures
- Increase trust and transparency in UK business
Under this law, Companies House must confirm that the people behind every company are real, verified individuals — similar to the checks already done when you open a bank account.
Not connected to a government “digital ID”
This process is completely separate from any wider government “digital identity” proposals.
- The Companies House IDV is only for company law purposes.
- It’s not a national ID or a shared digital identity.
- Your personal details will be kept securely within Companies House systems and won’t be used to create or link to a general government ID system.
What this means for you
Each relevant individual will need to complete a one-off verification through Companies House or an authorised agent (such as us your Accountant).
Once verified and provided a unique personal code , you’ll simply be able to continue your usual filing and compliance without any additional burden.
There’s no need for concern — this does not form part of a broader tracking or digital ID initiative, but simply a practical step to make UK company records more reliable and transparent.
